The doubles match for Team Europe in the 2022 Laver Cup served as Roger Federer’s final match in professional tennis. Federer fell to Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock of Team World in a game that went 6-4, 6-7 (2/7), and 9-11. Federer was paired with longtime rival Rafael Nadal for the competition. Federer may not have had a fantastic performance in the final match at the O2 Arena, but he nevertheless referred to the London evening as “beautiful” and thanked the players and his supporters for their kindness.
“It was a magical evening yesterday. Thank you again to all the players and fans who were here to share this moment with me. It means the world,” wrote the 20-time Grand Slam champion on Twitter on Saturday.
“This is not the end-end, you know, life goes on,” said Federer.
“I’m healthy, I’m happy, everything’s great.
He continued, “The message from me was just to make sure I communicate my love for the game to the fans, and I let them know that perhaps we’ll see each other again on a different type of tennis court somewhere across the world.
Rafael Nadal, Federer’s on-court competitor and bitter rival, was also observed crying after the star announced his retirement. On social media, a photo of Nadal sobbing in front of Federer while the latter was also sobbing has gone viral.
