Tennis News Today: Serena Williams has hinted that she may make her long-awaited comeback to the tour at Wimbledon, exactly a year after her previous appearance at the same Grand Slam.
Williams, 40, was injured in the first round of the Championships last year after sustaining an ankle injury. She was forced to leave the court in tears after being forced to quit her match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
She also missed the Tokyo Olympics and the US Open in 2021, as well as the Australian Open earlier this year, due to a hamstring issue.
At a Bitcoin conference in Miami, Williams stated in an Instagram story alongside NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers: “He’s been boosting me up and getting me ready for Wimbledon while we’ve been talking about my comeback. I’m looking forward to it!”
When Rodgers asked her about a potential comeback at the US Open, she added: “Wimbledon’s before the US Open, I’ve got to play Wimbledon first. Exciting!”
This year’s Wimbledon will be held from June 27 to July 10, and Williams has won the prestigious grass-court tournament seven times. Her most recent victory was in 2016, and she first competed in SW19 in 1998.
Since winning her last Grand Slam victory at the 2017 Australian Open, the 40-year-old has been on the lookout for her 24th major. She has slid back to 246th in the WTA rankings as a result of her injury layoff.
Since giving birth to her daughter Olympia in 2017, Williams has reached the final of four Grand Slams, but has lost all four in straight sets.
Mouratoglou will be Halep’s coach
Patrick Mouratoglou, Williams’ coach, has revealed that he will work with Simona Halep after Williams “opened the door” for him.
After gaining agreement from Williams, whom he has coached for the past ten years, Mouratoglou accepted Halep’s offer to coach her full-time.
In May, he will begin his new job with the Romanian in Madrid.
“I realised how much I’ve missed teaching in the last eight months,” Mouratoglou remarked on Twitter. “It is my life’s passion, and I still believe I have so much to share.
“Simona came to the Mouratoglou Academy for a training block prior to Indian Wells. I dropped in on a few of her practises and watched her work out.
“At the end of the week, she asked me if I was available to coach her. I have the highest respect for her but it was out of the question at the time.
