US Open: After a surprising victory against the defending champion Daniil Medvedev to get to his first US Open quarterfinal, Nick Kyrgios has his sights set on the big prize.
The Australian, who earlier this summer advanced to the Wimbledon final, used exceptional power and dexterity to win 7-6 (11) 3-6 6-3 6-2.
Twelve months ago, Medvedev overcame Novak Djokovic to win his first Grand Slam championship in New York, but he was vanquished by the superior player under the lights on Arthur Ashe, and he will now drop from the top spot.
In addition to wanting to make the months spent away from Australia count by finally realising the potential of his immense skill, Kyrgios has talked extensively about the impact of his squad.
“I’ve been in some really tough situations mentally, and in some really scary places,” said the 27-year-old.
