Boxing Fight: On Saturday night, one of boxing’s most anticipated fights came to an end when Gervonta Davis stunned Ryan Garcia with a body shot in the seventh round.
With all but two of his victories coming by knockdown, Davis advanced to 29-0. Garcia had won 19 of his first 23 fights by way of KO, therefore it was his first loss.
In the second round, Davis had also used a left roundhouse to knock Garcia to the ground. Davis then spent most of the remaining rounds focusing on Garcia’s body.
“I didn’t think that body shot would end it, but I saw his facial expression and that’s what made me take it to him,” Davis claimed. “There’s no doubt that shot was good. I anticipated him standing up, but because I enjoy mind games, I was looking at him while he was looking at me, urging him to stand up. Simply shaking his head no,” he said.
Garcia did succeed in striking Davis with two precise rights in the sixth round, but ‘Tank’ answered with a left in the seventh that sent Garcia stumbling backwards while not immediately seeming to damage him.
Due to the hit, the 24-year-old was forced to take a knee, and referee Thomas Taylor decided to end the fight.
“He caught me with a good shot, and I just couldn’t recover,” Garcia claimed. “He sneaked under me and caught me well with a terrific body shot.
“I was unable to breathe. I tried to stand up again, but I just couldn’t.”
One of the biggest fights of the year included Davis and Garcia, who captured the excitement around the lightweight division, and former champions Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Manny Pacquiao were among the famous faces in the crowd.
Everything about it, according to Davis, was exhilarating. “I was thrilled to participate in this event. When I first started playing Golden Gloves, I saw Floyd (Mayweather Jr.) compete at the MGM. It was absurd. We’re actually here because I was just watching Rihanna perform at the Super Bowl and thought, That’s going to be me one day.”
Davis’ victory might pave the way for a clash with the unbeaten Devin Haney, who holds the division’s four main championship belts and is due to fight former champion Vasiliy Lomachenko in May.
