Boxing Live: When Kirstie Bavington boxes Olympic gold medalist Lauren Price on Saturday, she is aware that history will be made.
They compete at Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena for the first-ever professional women’s welterweight title in Britain.
Bavington is also aware that it will happen early in the career of her rival. She is certain that Price, who has only fought three professional fights and one eight-rounder, is too young for it.
“I believe so. She has never completed 10 rounds. The amateur game is very different from the professional game. It’s a different game, but we’ll see when we get there,” Bavington told Sky Sports.
Bavington, on the other hand, is a skilled prizefighter and a former European champion. She feels she has learnt strategies that the Welsh star hasn’t yet encountered because she has played in far more professional rounds than Price.
Bavington claimed, “I got headbutted several times in my most recent fight. The small headbutts and scuffs in between are what hurt you, but they are also what starts a fight.
“I fight fairly aggressively. We’ll see how she responds to the fact that, deep down, I enjoy being rough. She will receive it from me, and her response is required.
“I’m an energetic fighter who fights aggressively. All I have to do is use it properly.
“I have at least 10 rounds left in me. Now is just my time.”
With a tremendously excellent amateur resume, Lauren Price is predicted to perform well in this battle. However, Bavington is excited about the possibility of pulling a surprise.
“She will be sassy and unmistakably has that southpaw style. She promised Price that she would play along.
“If you want to put it that way, this is her moment. All of this is for her. She deserves this British title.
“I simply need to enter the room and remove that. That’s going to be taken away from her by Kirstie Bavington.”
The Birmingham fighter hopes to take advantage of Price’s alleged inexperience by using pressure tactics. She also wants to take advantage of the crowd at home.
“I never imagined I’d receive this chance, not just to defend the British, but also on Sky and in my hometown. I adore the support, bringing in so many admirers,” Bavington remarked.
