Historic Title Match: When Lauren Price and Kirstie Bavington square off on Saturday, history will be made.
At the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, they will square off over 10 rounds for the first British women’s welterweight championship.
Given that they are fighting in her hometown, Price is certain that the aggressive Bavington will do everything in her power to win.
“I’m confident that she’ll be willing. If you take a look at her most recent bout, she enters the first three or four rounds and gives it her all. She is trying to hit you and is in your face,” Price told Sky Sports.
“But it’s up to me to maintain my composure and forbid her from doing that.”
“I am confident that she will be prepared. She is from Birmingham and competes in boxing there. Going halfway across the world, she will have support, nothing I haven’t seen before,” said Price, a brilliant amateur who won gold medals at the Olympic, World, European, and Commonwealth games.
“For instance, when you boxed Australia in the Commonwealth Games final and everyone booed you, and things like that. I’ll also be bringing up a few from Wales.
“Being the first boxers to ever compete for it is an absolute honour for both of us and for Kirstie as well. I should add this to my list.”
Both of them are aware of how historic the occasion is. But Price’s professional career is just getting started. The Olympic champion will be fighting for the fourth time professionally, and her previous eight-round bout was against Naomi Mannes.
Fitness, according to Price and her training partner Karriss Artingstall, “is never going to be a question,” she said. “I’ve done my research. When I’m sparring, Rob [McCracken] is talking me through what to do while he is teaching me behind me.
“I know it’s a different game, but as an amateur, I’ve dealt with all kinds of styles.
“I’m more than confident I can complete the task.”
