British Women’s Title: The first women’s British title match in history will feature boxers Lauren Price and Kirstie Bavington.
On May 6 in Birmingham, Price will face Bavington for the first British women’s welterweight title as part of the Joshua Buatsi vs. Pawel Stepien card.
It was a pivotal time in the development of women’s boxing. More than a century after the inaugural British title fight, which took place in 1909, female boxers are now eligible to compete for the prestigious championship belt.
It presents Price with the chance to add to the history. Although winning gold at the Olympic Games in 2021 was her greatest accomplishment, she also won gold medals as an amateur at all other significant competitions, including the European and Commonwealth Games as well as the World Championships.
Price has won three fights since going pro, including one on the legendary Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall all-female card and another punch-perfect victory in Paris last month.
Said to be Price’s toughest challenge in his career, Bavington. The boxer from the Midlands defeated April Hunter on points in 2021 to snap her undefeated streak and earn the European welterweight championship last year.
On the same night, Team GB hero and light-heavyweight sensation Ben Whittaker make his comeback against Jordan Grant, while Joshua Buatsi puts his world title aspirations in jeopardy against Polish challenger Pawel Stepien.
Furthermore, Manchester’s Macaulay McGowan challenges English middleweight champion Tyler Denny, while Kaisee Benjamin bumps into Sean McComb.
“It’s a complete honour,” said Price. “I can add that to my list of things to do to go make history. I really can’t believe it. I feel so proud right now.
“However, I was looking forward to the fight on May 6. But this is the cherry on top. My goal is to compete for such a prestigious title in my fourth professional fight. It’s an incredible honour.”
Ben Shalom, the founder and CEO of BOXXER, said: “We are immensely delighted to be history makers for women’s boxing once again with Lauren Price fighting for the first-ever British women’s title versus Kirstie Bavington.
