World Title: According to promoter Ben-Shalom, Lauren Price could fight for a world title before the end of 2023, despite only having three professional fights under her belt.
When Wales’ Price won the middleweight gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, she was a key member of Britain’s tremendously successful Olympic team.
That marked the end of Price’s remarkable amateur career, which included victories at the Olympics, the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games, and the European Games, as well as bronze medals at the World, Commonwealth, and three European competitions.
Ben Shalom, the promoter of BOXXER, is persuaded that Price can replicate her impressive amateur record in professional boxing.
He points out that Price boxed her first eight-round fight in Paris against Naomi Mannes, a former European title challenger who was 6-1 at the time. He calls it “a real tough ask in her third fight,” but Price won clearly on points. Price had already competed professionally in two bouts before that.
“The only way we’re going to see Lauren Price grow to be her best is if she’s put under pressure and in situations that might put her to the test a little bit early on. However, I believe it will yield results,” Shalom told Sky Sports.
He expects to keep up with that aspiration with Value’s matchmaking,” Shalom stated, “She is going to move very quickly.”
“You think back to when Claressa Shields changed sides and fought Franchon Crews for the first time in a professional fight. So it’s been finished previously. We need to fight hard to show Lauren that she can compete at that level.
“We believe that she is out of this world, so she needs to take fights that other fighters would never take, because of her pedigree, because of how good she is.”
Price will fight on the undercard of Joshua Buatsi vs. Pawel Stepien on May 6 in Birmingham.
She is moving in a direction that could land her a fight for the world title before the end of 2023.
“I think Lauren will benefit greatly from the timing. She will be able to compete for world titles, according to my expectations, by the end of this year. It’s exciting,” Shalom exclaimed,
“I think she believes should do things that perhaps just Claressa has done previously and different contenders haven’t done previously. She wants to become a multi-weight world champion and progress through weight classes. The beginning is here.
“It bodes well for those world titles, which we hope to see sooner rather than later,”
