Boxing Live News: At Wembley Arena in London on Saturday night, Katie Taylor defeated challenger Karen Elizabeth Carabajal to retain the undisputed lightweight title.
Irish star Taylor won with a big margin of victory, earning the verdict with scores of 98-92 for Bence Kovacs, 99-91 for Karoline Puetz, and 100-91 for Victor Loughlin.
Before facing Taylor, Carabajal had won 19 consecutive fights without a loss. She had never boxed outside of Argentina before, though, and she had never faced a champion. In the end, she was outmatched.
In the second half of the fight, Taylor—who made her professional debut here in 2016—pressed home her lead thanks to better footwork, hand speed, and precision.
In round five, Carbajal took the brunt of Taylor’s punches as the Irishwoman’s timing became more accurate and a left-right combination left the South American grimacing.
In the seventh round, Taylor showed off all of her abilities and furthered her advantage by landing three more unanswered blows. Carbajal was thrown off balance in the ninth by two fast left hooks.
After an unintentional head-to-head collision in the ninth round’s opening frame, Carbajal came out swinging and sustained a facial injury on the right side.
Although Taylor had the advantage going into the last round, she pursued a spectacle finish as two looping right hands startled her opponent.
“She is undoubtedly a fierce warrior. She stood to gain greatly from tonight’s match, but I believe I boxed quite well. She occasionally acted strange. However, I’m just happy to have won “Later, Taylor remarked.
“22 fights, 22 victories. That is what it is all about—still unbeaten and unchallenged.”
This was Taylor’s first fight since she defeated her formidable adversary Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden in New York in April, and it was her eighth consecutive defence of the unified IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO 135lb crowns.
Although a rematch with Serrano would be tempting, Taylor’s ultimate objective is to get the next fight in a stadium.
“Whether Amanda Serrano is involved or not, we want the fight to take place at Croke Park. 80000 individuals. Everyone in this room will participate, “She spoke.
The largest event in women’s boxing history would be “that.”
