Boxing News: Following his defeat by Kell Brook, Amir Khan has announced the end of his boxing career, saying, “It’s time to put up my gloves.”
In a letter on social media, the 35-year-old former world champion revealed his retirement after a stoppage loss to Brook in February.
He said on Twitter: “It’s time to hang up my gloves. I feel blessed to have had such an amazing career that has spanned over 27 years. I want to say a heartfelt thanks to the incredible teams I have worked with and to my family, friends and fans for the love and support they have shown me.”
During a 40-fight career that included 34 victories and six losses, Khan unified world titles at super-lightweight and challenged pound-for-pound superstars Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
After capturing an Olympic silver medal at the 2004 Athens Games, the Bolton fighter began his professional career in 2005.
Khan became a world champion in July 2009, defeating Andriy Kotelnik on points to win the WBA super-lightweight championship, and he added the IBF title two years later by stopping Zab Judah.
Khan’s world title reign came to an end after a contentious points loss to Lamont Peterson, and he was stopped by Danny Garcia when attempting to capture the WBC and WBA crowns in his next bout.
Khan made the bold decision to go up to middleweight to face Canelo for the WBC championship, but was knocked out in the sixth round in May 2016 then stopped by Crawford in the sixth round of their WBO title fight in April 2019.
In February, he finally shared the ring with Brook, embracing his foe in the ring after their conflict was resolved.
