Boxing News: At London’s Wembley Arena, Artur Beterbiev defeated Anthony Yarde by way of an eight-round knockout to successfully defend his unified WBC, WBO, and IBF light-heavyweight belts.
This world title match was a fierce, brutal struggle.
The challenger started off strong while boxing in his hometown, moving lightly on his feet as he attempted to catch Beterbiev (19-0) with his left hook and the sporadic hard right.
All along, the champion was aggressive, charging in and trying to hit hard. However, Yarde (23-3) interfered with him, occasionally landing as Beterbiev advanced.
Yarde was putting up a fight and leading the way. In the second round, he broke open and launched forward with a precise right uppercut.
With a left hook right at the end of the third round, Beterbiev injured Yarde. In the fourth round, the champion realised his advantage and landed powerful blows.
However, Yarde pounded his way out of danger in the fifth round, just as it seemed like he would be in trouble. Beterbiev was forced to hold for a while by a strong right.
The 38-year-old champion developed a cut and started to appear worn out.
Yarde smacked his right in with explosive force after landing a vicious left hook. However, Beterbiev sent devastating combinations into his body, turned him around, and encircled him with ropes.
Beterbiev found the winning shots in the eighth round. He used a quick right to knock Yarde out and a hook to finish him off. At 2:00, the referee entered to call time on the match because Yarde was seriously injured.
With 19 victories and 19 knockouts in his illustrious professional career, Beterbiev offered words of support for Yarde following the bout.
“I can’t say that I fought poorly, but if I do it again, I want to improve. However, I feel good,” he said to BT Sport. “Anthony acted (punch hard). Anthony is a young man—31. he’s I believe he still has time, and I pray for his future success.”
“If I’m being completely honest, I came back repeatedly because we understood and anticipated the blows he was going to throw.”
On the undercard, Moses Itauma, a promising heavyweight prospect who was a world and European youth champion as an amateur, made his professional debut.
The southpaw dispatched Marcel Bode with ease, stopping him in 23 seconds after positioning two powerful left crosses to knock the Czech out cold.
His older brother Karol Itauma, who was previously on the bill, suffered a shocking defeat. Ezequiel Osvaldo Maderna of Argentina repeatedly hit the young southpaw with straight rights before dropping him with a vicious cross in the fifth round.
