Boxing News: As she gets ready to advance in her professional career in 2023, Olympic gold medalist Lauren Price is seeking a homecoming bout in Wales.
The Great Britain team had their most successful Olympic boxing performance in 100 years at the Tokyo Games in 2021. One of the heroes of that team was Wales’ Price, who won the middleweight gold medal after a string of outstanding performances.
She became professional in 2022, winning her first fight at Wembley Arena before stopping Timea Belik at The O2 in London in October on the undercard of Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall.
Price now desires to fight professionally in Wales.
“That would be fantastic. Getting the support of the Welsh fans is my goal,” told Sky Sports, Price. “To box in Wales would be a dream come true.
We are discussing it, she continued. ” I should box in Wales as soon as possible to rally the support of the crowd. The Olympics received a lot of support for me.
“If I fight in Wales, they’ll support me.”
She has represented Wales in a variety of sports, not just boxing. Also, she participated in international football as well.
She stated, “I used to play football and I played for Cardiff. One day, boxing at that stadium would be fantastic.”
Given that Price competed at middleweight, a level or two over her natural weight, her gold medal win in the Olympics was all the more remarkable. Over the next years, a prospective super-fight might be made after she achieves world-class status as a professional. It would be difficult to resist boxing Claressa Shields at super-welterweight.
Why not, as long as she calms down a little bit? Price chuckled as he spoke. “Who knows, it may even fill the Principality [stadium],” someone said.
Prior to switching to eight rounds, Price plans to use her next match as her final six-rounder. She hopes to be participating over the championship distance of 10 rounds by the end of 2023.
Price hopes to box five times over the course of the next 12 months, just like her partner Karriss Artingstall, an Olympic medalist from the Tokyo Games who is now a professional fighter.
“We are in six-round fights, but we are preparing for a ten-round bout. We’re both in excellent shape,” explained Price. “By the end of the year, if I engage in five bouts, I’ll be more than prepared to take charge.
“We want step-ups because the professional game is different. I want to compete in a 10-round fight, but I’ll listen to Rob McCracken, their trainer, and take his recommendations into consideration.
