British Title Fight: Fabio Wardley, the current British heavyweight champion, and Frazer Clarke may run into each other.
On Saturday, Clarke, a super heavyweight Olympic bronze medalist in 2021, recorded his fifth triumph in the ring. He defeated the Argentine on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Liam Smith in Manchester, becoming the first person to stop Kevin Espindola.
In order to go through six-round matches and into title contention, Clarke will target Wardley’s British championship.
“To achieve it by the end of the year is my goal. Although there is lighthearted banter between Fabio and me, we are both competitors,” Clarke told Sky Sports.
“Unfortunately, there can only be one and we want to test and combat each other. I hope I can place myself in a position to be able to compete for what he has because I want it.”
Wardley, who has 15 professional victories without a loss, most recently defeated Nathan Gorman to claim the Lonsdale belt.
Clarke, however, is a highly skilled amateur and an Olympian who also won medals at other important events. That might be significant in a conflict with Wardley.
“Only time can tell. I am aware of my abilities, experiences, and accomplishments. There is no doubting that he is a skilled fighter. I watched from ringside as he successfully defended his British title. If you ask him to beat me, he will, and if you ask me to beat him, I will. That’s how easy it is,” Clarke added.
“It wouldn’t be a small fight, so it’s not a stepping stone, but it’s on my radar.”
On the Toe2Toe podcast, Wardley expressed his excitement for the task.
There are many competent fighters out there, he declared. “The goal is to have big fights. I want to be a part of it.”
“That wonderful, flashy belt makes me a nice, shiny target,” the man said.
“I just want to be right in the middle of those good battles, right in the middle of those excellent tests so I can leave the ring knowing I’ve really put myself on the line there and really come out on the other side.”
He left open the possibility of seeing Clarke later this year. “He clearly wants to advance his profession and get going. He requires a few more fights, as he acknowledged himself. He should exert himself a bit more. I doubt he was especially pleased with any of his performances during the fights he had, let alone the opponent,” Wardley stated Regarding Clarke.
