World Ranking: According to the former boxer, boxing trainer, and commentator Gary Logan, awarding the Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury winner a world ranking would be “a fiasco.”
The WBC declared that if Jake Paul defeated Tommy Fury, the younger brother of WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, they would offer him a spot in their cruiserweight world rankings.
Paul, a YouTuber turned prizefighter, has so far only triumphed over other influencers, basketball players, and MMA fighters in his boxing matches, so this move is unexpected.
Moreover, he has boxed between catchweight (light-heavy and cruiserweight).
Logan told Sky Sports, “It’s not even at cruiserweight against a much smaller fighter and he gets a global rating.”
“It’s merely a disaster. It makes no sense to me in any way. How can he obtain a world ranking as a cruiserweight when he has never faced a fighter with a high world ranking? Tommy Fury is not a cruiserweight.”
As Fury and Paul are both unbeaten prospects, this fight already has a good matchup.
Logan, though, believes that it is much too early to enter the winner at the world level.
“What does that convey to other combatants?” Logan inquired.
“It makes no difference who you fight. We will rank you if we so want.
“They’re arguing that as long as you have enough YouTube influence, you don’t need to defend it or fight any decent people.
“Just a joke, really. It demonstrates the immense power of YouTube, which is really alarming. People are simply not being realistic about these fighters, which is the reason.
“I have no doubt that Jake Paul practises hard and prepares well for his competitions. He hasn’t, however, faced anyone who can be considered to be even remotely close to a true professional boxer. He hasn’t even faced a professional boxer. He has no amateur experience.
“When he does engage in combat with a person who is even remotely respectable, the writing will eventually be on the wall regarding how much he will be ashamed. Not even close to decent.”
“It’s a mess. I’m very discouraged by that,” said Logan. “I think it just contradicts what has happened in the past.
“I understand that times have changed, but your skill level should always be considered. I’ve heard of people manipulating rankings, but this one tops them all.”
