WBC Heavyweight Title: At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Saturday night, Tyson Fury overpowered Derek Chisora to defend his WBC heavyweight title in 10 rounds successfully.
Fury delivered a commanding performance. He repeatedly beat Chisora until, with nine seconds left in the tenth round, referee Victor Loughlin intervened and stopped it.
Chisora was justifiably saved by his own bravery, but it wasn’t a final punch that brought it to an end.
Fury quickly gained control of their fight despite Chisora trying to close him down by moving closer to him. As the fight entered its second half, he started to beat him up, landing nearly at will.
He continued to exert merciless pressure, wearing out his opponent, until the referee was forced to step in.
The Story of the Fight
Chisora first punched Fury in the midsection and chest, forcing him into a corner. But his initial optimism was only fleeting. Fury tipped Chisora back with a fast left after firing a right down to connect. Then, he demonstrated his ability to suddenly break open with a painful combination of strikes.
Chisora overpowered with a right hook. That must have been how the WBC champion felt. He abruptly retreated in response to another right hand thrown over the top by Chisora and retaliated with a sarcastic backhand of his own.
His right was struck hard in the torso and then the head by fury. In the second round, Chisora took a devastating uppercut.
Fury would start attacking viciously after that, but Chisora was too determined to back down or crumble. Instead, he simply put up with Fury’s strikes.
Fury had gained enough control by the third round to be able to show off, winding up his backhand before striking Chisora.
Chisora was unable to stop the attack heading his way, not even after switching to the southpaw.
Fury angled to the left as the opponent moved forward, catching the head or body and exposing too many weaknesses in Chisora’s defence.
He was continually worn down by fury. In the ninth round, Fury manoeuvred his opponent into a corner and then started throwing hard blows.
When he discovered space, he was even more dangerous, quickly one-twoing the challenger.
Even though Chisora’s right eye had a bulge under it, he continued to move slowly. He threw a desperate hook at his tormentor, but it only connected with the top rope.
Chisora needed a punch in the tenth round, but he was never going to find it. Instead, the referee stopped the bout at 2.51 of the 10th round because the champion was landing too many powerful strikes on him.
