Ashes 2023: The second Ashes Test between Australia and England is set to begin at Lord’s on Wednesday, June 28. Following a tight defeat in the first Test at Edgbaston, England is considering strategic changes to rebound and equal the series. They are contemplating Mark Wood, a speedster, and Chris Woakes, a Lord’s specialist, as prospective Moeen Ali replacements, with a focus on utilising Joe Root’s efficient part-time spin.
Nasser Hussain, a former England captain, advocated for Wood’s participation, citing his great track record against Australia in their previous encounter in 2021/22. Wood was England’s highest wicket-taker in the series.
Woakes, who last played a Test in March 2022, has an impressive record in five matches at Lord’s. The 34-year-old all-rounder has 27 wickets at an average of 11.33 and 306 runs at a remarkable average of 61.2 on this historic ground.
“He (Wood) would probably have to come in for Moeen and use Joe Root as your spinner, so go with four seamers or Chris Woakes.” Chris Woakes has a solid record at Lord’s, which would benefit the batting while also adding another all-rounder. It’s either Woakes or Wood for Moeen Ali.”This choice would give England more depth in both the batting and bowling areas,” Hussain was cited by the ICC as saying.
They obviously want to win, but they also want to play appealing cricket: Hussain
England is now behind the Ashes series (0-1) heading into the Lord’s Test following a heartbreaking two-wicket defeat at Edgbaston. However, the squad has enjoyed a terrific year, winning 11 of 14 Tests in a row under captain Ben Stokes’ guidance.
Surprisingly, after the first Ashes Test defeat, skipper Ben Stokes stated that his team is not just concerned with obtaining outcomes in their favour every time, but also with entertaining their fans with their ‘Bazball’ style of cricket. However, this did not sit well with some cricket fans and analysts. Former England captain Nasser Hussain, on the other hand, believes the Stokes-led team will prevail in the Ashes Test series.
“They definitely want to win, as do all England fans, but they also want to see them play attractive cricket,” Hussain added.
