ODI World Cup: The Punjab Cricket Association’s I.S. Bindra Stadium in Mohali may not host a single match of the next ODI World Cup 2023, which is set to take place in India later this year. The stadium is best known for hosting the high-octane semi-final of the 2011 ODI World Cup between India and Pakistan, which India won by 29 runs.
According to sources, Mohali was left out of the finalised venues for the major event after it did not appear on the list of possible venues for the tournament.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the ODI World Cup 2023 will feature 48 matches contested across 12 cities in India, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Rajkot, and Mumbai, from October 5 to November 19.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to finalise the locations for any of the matches, with the exception of the final, which will be played at Ahmedabad’s huge Narendra Modi Stadium.
“Nothing has been told to us officially from the BCCI, hence I won’t be able to comment on the same,” Dilsher Khanna, secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), was reported as saying by News18.
According to a source, PCA has accelerated development at its new Mullanpur Stadium in Mohali in order to have it ready for the World Cup. So date, the PCA Stadium has hosted four ICC World Cup matches and three ICC World T20 matches.
Eden Gardens was unable to hold the 2011 World Cup match between India and England.
The iconic Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata missed out on hosting an exciting group-stage match between India and England during the 2011 World Cup because renovation work could not be completed on time.
The match, however, was moved to M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on February 27, 2011. Surprisingly, the match concluded in a tie. However, Kolkata hosted the remaining scheduled matches, which included Ireland versus South Africa, Ireland versus the Netherlands, and Kenya versus Zimbabwe.
