ODI World Cup: Until and unless it is a knockout game like the Final, PCB Chairman Najam Sethi has expressed his uneasiness over playing at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against India to his ICC colleague Greg Barclay. After the hybrid model was rejected, tensions between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) grew more severe. Furthermore, the PCB suffered a serious setback when its planned hybrid format for the organisation of the 2023 Asia Cup was rejected by Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
PCB has acknowledged that they have no issues playing in Bengaluru, Kolkata, or Chennai if the Pakistan national team receives approval from the Pakistani government to travel to India for the ICC world cup. Notably, Barclay recently came to Karachi with ICC General Manager Geoff Allardice to ask the PCB chairman for guarantees that they won’t insist that their ODI World Cup matches to be held at a neutral site. This is due to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC)’s impending rejection of their request to employ the suggested hybrid model for the Asia Cup.
“Sethi told Barclay and Allardice that Pakistan doesn’t want to play in Ahmedabad unless it’s a knockout match like the championship game. If the national team receives permission from the Pakistani government to come to India for the international tournament scheduled for October and November, he even asked the International Cricket Council to organise their games in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata,” according to Onmanorama.
Najam Sethi encourages the ICC to persuade the BCCI to adopt a “hybrid model”
A top PCB insider claims that Najam Sethi also requested the ICC representatives persuade the BCCI to approve Pakistan’s hybrid format for the Asia Cup. Sethi also discussed his opinions on the most recent revenue-sharing arrangement. Sethi wanted an increase in the Pakistan board’s share for the upcoming five-year cycle since he seemed dissatisfied with the current income system in place.
In a similar vein, the PCB chairman defended his assertion by pointing out that Australia and England regularly play bilateral series with India and permit their players to compete in the Indian Premier League, both of which generate additional revenue for the respective boards. Consequently, it was unjust on their behalf, especially in light of the current state of Pakistan Cricket.
Officials from the ICC and BCCI, who are presently attending the World Test Championship in London, are anticipated to make a final decision about the schedule and sites for the forthcoming ODI World Cup 2023, which is slated to take place in India later this year.
