ICC’s ODI Cricketers: After successful seasons for their respective teams in 2022, Babar Azam and Nat Sciver are awarded the top ODI prizes.
After yet another successful year with the bat, Babar Azam, Pakistan’s all-format captain, has won the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year Award for the second consecutive year. The world’s best ODI batsman collected 679 runs from nine games at an astounding average of 84.87, including three centuries.
While Babar Azam’s leadership in the game’s longest format came under fire following a dismal home record in 2022, the batting prodigy took the initiative in the 50-over format. Aside from his outstanding batting performance, in which he scored more than 50 runs eight times in nine games, Pakistan lost just one ODI under his leadership in 2022.
One of the year’s highlights was his swashbuckling century against Australia in the second One-Day International at Lahore in March 2022, as he led his team to a thrilling victory with the fastest century in the format. After losing the opening ODI against the visitors, he also hit an undefeated hundred in the series decider to seal the victory.
Nat Sciver was honoured for an outstanding year for England.
The ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year has been announced, honouring Natalie Sciver, the star English all-rounder, after a successful 2022 for the national squad. The 30-year-old finished 2022 as the second-highest run-scorer, trailing only South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, with 833 runs at an average of 59.5 and a strike rate of 91.43. For the English side, she took 11 wickets in 17 innings.
Despite having a tremendous career thus far, the Englishwoman’s performance at the 2022 ODI World Cup will be with her forever. During the competition, she was at the peak of her mercurial form, scoring 436 runs at an astounding average of over 70. She dragged her team to the final and finished as the third-highest run scorer in the competition, but in vain because England lost.
