Dwight Yorke thinks Ollie Watkins could be Harry Kane’s successor at the point of attack for the England national team, the Trinidad and Tobago man has said.
Yorke appoints striking successor for Kane at England
Watkins has had a good season at Aston Villa with 15 goals in the Premier League, 12 of which came in the second half of the season. Yorke, who once played at Villa Park himself, had nice words for MatchCenter. He said, “First for himself, then for his brother-in-law. Watkins? His style of play is a bit like mine. I think I was a bit faster and I could dribble better.”
Then the compliments poured in Watkins’ direction. “It’s easy to forget that he didn’t even play in the Premier League three years ago. He needs to be a bit more consistent, he will want to score more himself. But he works hard, he has become a better point of contact, his effort is always one hundred percent. Whether he can succeed Kane? I think he already has an eye on that, yes. But let him take it one step at a time: become the main man at Villa first, then look at his position at England,” said Yorke.
He continued, “You have to show it at your club, week in, week out. If he manages to do that, England will come naturally. Now he has to focus on Villa, and if he can bring that consistency to his game, I think he has an excellent chance of being England’s first striker in three years’ time.”
Yorke, now 51, has some right to speak when it comes to attackers. At Aston Villa, Yorke developed into a top attacker, who won three national titles and the Champions League in the service of Manchester United and played an important role in this himself.
Monchi: Aston Villa’s technical director
Speaking of Watkins, Aston Villa have a new technical director. Monchi assumes the post. It is no coincidence that Unai Emery is at the helm there. Monchi and Emery formed a successful duo in Seville between 2014 and 2016, winning the Europa League three years in a row.
Víctor Orta (left Leeds United last month) and Braulio Vázquez (Osasuna) are mentioned as possible successors to Monchi.
