Football News: Manchester City defeated cross-town rivals Manchester United 4-1 in a Premier League derby match on Sunday. Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored twice. City made a flying start in front of their home fans at the Etihad Stadium, taking the lead in the fifth minute thanks to a De Bruyne strike. De Bruyne ran into the middle of United’s box and finished a pass from the left flank to put his team ahead. It didn’t take long for United to retaliate.
Following a pair of half-chances that United failed to convert, Jadon Sancho cut in from the left flank on a counter-attack and curled the ball magnificently into the back of the net to draw the game level.
City scored again six minutes later, this time through De Bruyne. Phil Foden’s attempt was saved by David de Gea after City took advantage of Anthony Elanga’s missed pass. United, on the other hand, failed to clear the ball, allowing De Bruyne to score from close range.
City dominated the second half, and Riyad Mahrez scored in the 68th minute with a thundering half-volley that took a deflection on its way.
The Algerian winger then put the cherry on top for City by scoring in the 90th minute to complete a 4-1 victory.
Ralf Rangnick did not pick a recognised striker in his starting line-up at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, therefore Cristiano Ronaldo did not play.
Due to injury, Edinson Cavani was also ruled out, while Marcus Rashford was benched in favour of Elanga and Sancho in a makeshift attack.
United’s Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw both missed the game after testing positive for coronavirus.
