Harry Kane’s winner against Manchester City is being praised in the English media. Tottenham Hotspur’s new all-time top scorer also received a call from absent Spurs manager Antonio Conte after the home win over City.
Kane passed the illustrious Jimmy Greaves as Spurs’ all-time top scorer : the counter now stands at 267 goals. “Harry will be remembered for a very long time for his records and records that may follow,” said Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher. “He would undoubtedly have wanted to have many prizes to his name, but it is also special when you are the man at a club. When you think of Spurs now, you think of Kane.”
Fellow analyst Graeme Souness saw Kane become the fastest player to break the 200 Premier League goals mark. ‘Statistics are so decisive for your legacy. Harry is now among all the big names. But for me Alan Shearer remains the best English striker of all time,” said the Scottish former player of Liverpool, among others.
The fact that Kane has never won a prize with Tottenham says nothing about the status of the eighty-time international, according to English media. “Kane doesn’t need Spurs awards to prove his greatness,” writes The Guardian.
One season wonder
“Kane called Greaves’ club record breaking rather surreal, but anyone following his career at Spurs disagreed,” said The Daily Mail. “Few forwards score goals with such natural composure as he does. It’s a gift that can’t be learned.”
Kane took to Twitter to celebrate his milestone. In it he wrote ‘One season wonder’, with a wink referring to his 267 goals for Tottenham. In August 2012, Kane made his Premier League debut in Spurs’ main squad against Newcastle United at the age of nineteen. He scored his first goal in the top English division in April 2014 against Sunderland.
After the victory over City, Kane received a call in the dressing room from Spurs manager Conte. Who will not be on the bench with the Londoners due to an operation. “You make me proud,” the Italian told Kane. Spurs are fifth in the Premier League due to the victory over City. The gap with number four Newcastle is one point.
