It was Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane’s evening. The striker scored the second English goal in the away match at Italy (1-2) from the penalty spot. With that, the Tottenham Hotspur man dethroned Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top scorer. Naturally, Harry Kane was in front of the cameras afterwards.
“We feel like one of the best teams in Europe, we have to keep knocking on the door and we are close. Our performance tonight has shown that we are ready for the next challenge. The qualifying series will be difficult, but we hope we can prepare well for next year,” he said on Channel 4.
Record holder Harry Kane: “Wayne Rooney already said I would get that shoe back one day”
Of course, Harry Kane had nice words about the dethroned top scorer Wayne Rooney. “I’m a big fan of Wayne. Of course I was on the field when Wayne broke the record, I know how much the record meant to him and I was so proud of him. I gave him a shoe of honour for the record and he already said to me: ‘one day I will give it back to you’. A special guy, an absolute legend for England. Great to hear that from him. This means everything to me. I was so excited to play for England again,” said Wazza.
The moment of his goal, the penalty kick, felt typical for Harry Kane, after he missed a crucial penalty against France at the World Cup. “It had to be with a penalty, yes. I just picked a corner. Once he was seated, I felt a tremendous amount of emotion. A magical moment and a great evening anyway. We hadn’t won in Italy for so long, it’s very special to score and win,” said Harry Kane after England’s first victory in Italy since 1961.
Analyst and former top footballer Steven Gerrard also congratulated the man who was once his teammate. “This is special for him and his family, especially after that heartbreaking World Cup. I am so happy for him, also because of all the compliments that will come his way,” complimented the legendary midfielder.
