Lyon have been expelled from this season’s Coupe de France, alongside opponents Paris FC. The pair had to abandon their last-64 encounter earlier this month due to fans unfurling disorder at Stade Sebastien Charlety.
Lyon supporters having already been involved in two incidents involving Marseille’s Dimitri Payet (football news).
Now, Lyon as well as Paris FC, both teams, have received varying sanctions from the French Football Federation (FFF).
Les Gones, in particular, are facing harsher sanctions for the reprehensible actions of their fan base.
The Ligue 1 heavyweights saw their trip to the capital halt at half-time after rival fans’ altercations. Because both sets of supporters spilled out onto the pitch, they eventually ensured that the game was unable to restart.
The clash between the Ligue 1 heavyweights and their second-tier hosts had reached the interval earlier this month at 1-1. Moussa Dembele had cancelled out already Gaetan Laura’s opener.
However, when the half-time break arrived, both sets of supporters started hurling flares and fireworks at each other. The fighting subsequently spilled onto the pitch when police attempted to contain these rowdy clashes between fans.
Though they did ultimately clear off the rogue fans from the pitch, the two teams decided to abandon the game.
In the aftermath of this abandonment, both clubs pointing the finger of blame at the other through their presidents.
Lyon Have Been Expelled from This Season’s Coupe de France
The French Football Federation (FFF) have now ended any hope of Paris FC and Lyon replaying this behind closed doors.
Not only this, FFF have also confirmed that they will expel both teams from this season’s Coupe de France.
They have instead handed potential last-32 opponent Nice a bye to the last-16.
In addition, Lyon have received a warning that they could further miss out on next year’s edition of the competition. They stand to face exclusion next time too, thus, if there any further incidents involving their fans this term.
All the while, FFF have banned their travelling supporters from away games for the remaining duration of the campaign.
The FFF also levy fines on both sides for the actions of their fans. Lyon must now pay €50,000 (£42,000/$57,000), while Paris must fork out €10,000 (£8,500/$11,300).
