PSV 3-0 Ajax: The 3-0 victory over Ajax gave Xavi Simons an extra good feeling. The midfielder indicated that he had experienced something very extreme last week. Even on his own birthday, Simons made sure he was home on time.
“How I’ve been busy all week with this game, that’s not normal”
Because of the victory, PSV has passed Ajax in the ranking. At first it seemed mainly a duel for second place, but Simons wanted nothing to do with that. “We are not playing for second place,” he said at the press conference. “We’re playing for first place. The competition isn’t done yet, so we’ll see. We were really focused on ourselves. We put in the energy and scored great goals.”
Simons was therefore very much looking forward to the top match between PSV and Ajax. “How I’ve been busy all week with this game, that’s not normal. It’s my birthday Friday. I did enjoy a bit with my family, but also went home early. Because I wanted to focus on this game. When you come here, you immediately feel that pressure. How people experience that is very special,” he said.
Nevertheless, PSV is still eight points behind leader Feyenoord. PSV owes this mainly to the loss of points against the smaller teams. “To become champion you have to win top matches, but also show it against the small teams. That has not always happened unfortunately. That is why we are in this situation. But I always say: fall and get up again,” the midfielder added.
Good click with Veerman
In addition, Simons also had nice words for teammate Joey Veerman. He said, “It’s great to play with such players. I grew up in Spain with the ball and Joey is a player who can give beautiful balls. I enjoy him on the left side together with Patrick van Aanholt. We have a good connection.”
PSV has won the first match of the series with Ajax. Match number two will follow next Sunday. Then in the final of the KNVB Cup. Simons added, “Today we can enjoy, tomorrow a new week begins. A special week. You play for a prize. That’s very different. If we underestimate Ajax, things will go wrong. Next week is another game.”
