SC Cambuur 0-3 Feyenoord: Arne Slot turned out to be a happy trainer on Sunday after Feyenoord’s convincing victory over SC Cambuur. The team from Rotterdam fueled confidence in Leeuwarden towards the return in the quarterfinals of the Europa League against AS Roma.
Slot looks ahead to a trip to Rome: “Something is about to happen”
Slot was very satisfied with Feyenoord’s performance at Cambuur, three days after the victory over AS Roma. “You also see that of the eight clubs that are still playing in the Champions League, only two have won this weekend,” said the Feyenoord coach at the press conference. “It’s really not that easy to win because you’ve already taken off your jacket physically and mentally and I know from my own experience what it’s like for a club where it’s not going so well to play against a top club.”
“If you want to become champion, but also if things go badly, you are constantly under pressure. But there are two or three games a year where you don’t feel any pressure,” says Slot from the perspective of low-ranking teams. “Those are the home games against Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV. Then we as Feyenoord have to be top and I thought we were.”
Feyenoord will now focus on Roma, which won easily against Udinese at home on Sunday . “We are going to look back at our first game and their home game against Udinese. I felt that on Thursday we had the opportunity to free someone much more often than we did. We’ll show the boys. We play Thursday night in front of 70,000 people. Something is about to happen in Rome. We have to be able to withstand that,” said Slot.
Breaking the series
Slot does not expect to get more space from Roma because they are behind. “No, because I have said before: there is a picture that Mourinho is only falling back with his teams, but they are putting high pressure all over the field. They will do that again on Thursday, just like in De Kuip. I think historically most teams are capable of more at home than away. Roma will certainly be no exception to that,” he said.
“I am especially curious who they will come with, that will be something at a detailed level,” said Slot, who has not yet won an away match during this European season. “We don’t have to win, I know, but this is a statistic I’d like to change.”
