US Women’s Open: Danielle Kang said she had been diagnosed with a tumour on her spine during her second round at the US Women’s Open.
The tumour has not yet been established whether it is cancerous or benign, according to the 29-year-old, who is now ranked 12th in the world.
“I’ve gone through a lot of procedures so far, and with the process of elimination we are narrowing it down,” Kang said. “It’s going to take time.”
Kang was three over par during the first two rounds at Pine Needles in North Carolina, despite her diagnosis. With second-round play still going on, she was expected to make the cut late Friday.
Due to back problems, Kang had to withdraw from two tournaments earlier this season. Her doctors are unsure if the tumour was the primary source of her agony or if it was a contributing component.
She informed reporters that she had no intention of disclosing much about her condition, but that she had to since “word got out.”
“It’s not as simple as blaming the tumour for the situation right now,” Kang added. “It’s not just that I have a back problem; there’s a lot more to it.”
“The scary part is that I understand, and I didn’t want to publicise it, but I know it got out. There’s more to it. I just don’t want to really discuss the details of what’s going on in my back.”
