The International Crown will be back on the LPGA schedule in 2019 for the first time since last year.
The biennial competition will take place from May 4–7 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco with Hanwha Lifeplus as the new sponsor. The renowned course, which served as the site of the 2020 PGA Championship, will host its first top women’s competition there.
Instead of a continent or area, players will represent their home countries during the four-day competition. The top four golfers from each of the eight competing nations will be chosen based on their aggregate Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. Following the Palos Verdes Championship on April 2, 2023, the 32-player field will be set.
“The Hanwha Lifeplus International Crown is a real indicator of the LPGA’s global influence. One of the most thrilling chances an athlete can have, the 32 athletes who will participate at TPC Harding Park in 2023 will have the ultimate honour of wearing their national colours and representing their country, according to LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan. “We are really grateful to our partners and delighted to bring the International Crown back to our schedule.”
There will be a four-ball (best-ball) competition for the first three days. The top two nations from each pool will then proceed to Sunday, which will feature a different format than previous years. Each semifinal match will have two singles matches and one foursomes match, and both semifinal matches will be played early on Sunday. On Sunday afternoon, the winning semifinal countries will compete in the championship game alongside the losing semifinal nations, who will face off for third place. The third-place match and championship game will follow the same rules as the semifinals.
Incheon, South Korea’s Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea was the site of the 2018 competition, which was won by the Republic of Korea team, which included In Gee Chun, Sei Young Kim, Sung Hyun Park, and So Yeon Ryu.
In the years 2014–18, the International Crown competed three times. The 2020 event, however, which was scheduled to take place at the Centurion Club in England, was postponed because of COVID-19. The event was in limbo for a short while after UL backed out as the title sponsor and the LPGA tried to find a replacement.
