Golf News: After round one of the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore, Leona Maguire of Ireland sits three strokes behind leader Patty Tavatanakit.
Maguire, who won the Drive On Championship in Florida last month to become the first Irishwoman to win on the LPGA Tour, carded four birdies and two bogeys in a two-under round of 70 to tie for 19th position.
“Obviously, the best players in the world are here, which is always fun getting to play events with all the girls throughout the season,” Maguire said, noting that nine of the top ten players in the world are on the field.
“There’s still a lot of golf to be played. So I feel like I haven’t played my best golf yet, so it’s nice to shoot under par even though I wasn’t quite at my best.”
Thailand’s Tavatanakit, the winner of the 2021 Chevron Championship, blasted a bogey-free five-under 67 to take a one-shot lead over Danielle Kang, A Lim Kim, and Inbee Park.
Park, the defending champion in 2015 and 2017, was five-under-par before bogeying her final hole, while Kang was six-under before bogeying three of her final four holes.
Kang said she struggled with the heat on the first nine when she made five birdies.
She said: “It was just getting so hot at one point and unfortunately I think I just kind of checked out from golf for a little bit because I was more focused on trying to stay cool. I haven’t been in this kind of heat in a while.”
Top-ranked Jin Young Ko, Lydia Ko, and Brooke Henderson are among those tied for fifth place on three under par, two strokes behind Tavatanakit.
