After the first round of the Korea Championship on the DP World Tour, Antoine Rozner tied his career-low round to take a four-shot lead.
At the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon, Rozner shot nine birdies in a spectacular 63 to surpass the competition’s closest rivals, Andy Sullivan and Sanghyun Park.
Rozner started the back nine with back-to-back birdies from the 11th and then added four more in a five-hole stretch starting at the 14th on his way to the turn in 30.
Rozner, who earlier in the season won the Mauritius Open, birdied the first, took advantage of the par-five third, picked up a shot at the sixth, and finished the round without making a bogie.
“A lot of things went my way today,” Rozner remarked. “I clearly played well, but on a challenging golf course like this one, you need a little bit of luck to shoot 63. On my back nine, I didn’t have as many opportunities, but when I did, I took advantage of them.”
A run of four straight birdies, including one from 60 feet at the fifth, helped Sullivan to a first-round score of 67. Park is tied for second place after ending with back-to-back birdies.
I feel like my game is going in the right direction, so I just have to keep plugging away at it in the hopes of winning on Sunday,” said Sullivan. “The course doesn’t seem to be producing many birdies, in my opinion. I’m aware that I had some success with the putter, but you have to be sharp.”
David Law and Robert MacIntyre of Scotland both opened the round with a three-under 69, while Yannik Paul kept up his outstanding form to join the group on four under that also includes Pablo Larrazabal and Alexander Bjork.
In contrast to Jordan Smith and Rasmus Hojgaard, who both laboured to opening-round scores of 74, Adrian Meronk and Kazuki Higa, the two highest-ranked players in the field, are tied for 47th position after both shooting rounds of level-par 72.
