LPGA Tour: Minjee Lee won the Cognizant Founders Cup by one stroke over Lexi Thompson. It was Lee’s first LPGA Tour victory of the season.
With seven holes left in her round at Upper Montclair Country Club, Lee was over par, but she took advantage of the par-five 12th and 14th holes and birdied the par-four 18th to finish with a two-under 70 and finish the week on 19 under.
The Australian finished two shots ahead of Thompson, who hasn’t won on the LPGA Tour since 2019, while Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden tied for third with American Angel Yin after a final-round 72.
Lee’s triumph is her first since winning her first major championship at the Evian Championship last summer, and it is also her seventh on the LPGA Tour. Her current victory is expected to vault her up the Race to the CME Globe points list from 13th to third.
“I wasn’t that nervous, but obviously I wasn’t striking it as well as I wanted to,” Lee admitted after her win. “I still drove it and put it really well, so trying to take the positives. At the end of the day, I still got the job done, so I’m happy.”
Carlota Ciganda birdied six of her first eight holes on her way to a final-round 64, putting her in fifth place, one shot ahead of Nasa Hataoka and Megan Khang. After a round-of-the-day 63, Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul finished inside the top-10.
“I really needed a good week, a good tournament to get some confidence, and I’m very happy it was in this tournament,” Ciganda said. “Now starting the summer with the US Open in a couple of weeks and the KPMG [Women’s PGA Championship], so I’m happy with the way I played, but I want to keep playing and still some work to do in the summer.”
World No. 1 Jin Young Ko finished the week in the top 20 with a three-under 69, while Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Gemma Dryburgh led the British interest with three-under 69s.
