PGA Tour: Four players, including Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa, are tied for the lead after the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, leaving England’s Tommy Fleetwood two strokes down.
Hovland, Morikawa, Joo-Hyung Kim of South Korea, Sepp Straka of Austria, and Sam Burns of the United States are in first place at three under after rounds of 69.
Max Homa and Cameron Young, two Americans, are two strokes behind Fleetwood.
Prior to Tiger Woods’ foot injury, Straka was at his house in Alabama getting ready for a busy week that included golf tournaments at his club, a friend’s wedding, and the SEC Championship game.
The Woods replacement shot a three-under 69 in the pouring rain at Albany, sharing the lead with the reigning champion Hovland, Kim, and Morikawa.
In the pro-am, Straka went out first, a position usually held by Woods. He was placed with Justin Thomas, who usually competes with Tiger Woods in the opening round.
Although my iron game wasn’t as strong as his, Straka claimed that it may have had some influence on him. So, that was good, I guess.
Before making a bogey on the 16th, Hovland was the only player to achieve four under. In order to become the second player, after Tiger Woods, to sweep this holiday tournament, he must succeed.
Hovland is once more remaining with Morikawa. When Hovland came back with a 66 to win a year ago, Morikawa had a five-shot lead and needed a victory to move up to No. 1 in the world. However, Morikawa shot 76 in the final round that day.
