23rd Ryder Cup: Sergio Garcia won’t be able to participate in the required four events, forfeiting his DP World Tour membership and excluding him from the Ryder Cup the following year.
The Spaniard is content with his choice.
Garcia said Thursday at the LIV Golf finals in Doral, “I knew some of the things that would happen if I joined [LIV Golf], but at the end of the day, as we’re witnessing, you can see that some of the players on the other side don’t really want me there. “I don’t want to be anyone’s burden, especially during a Ryder Cup. Even if it hurts, I’d rather stay away from it and ensure that Europe has the best chance of winning than go there and risk three or four other players becoming offended or anything.
Before joining LIV Golf, Garcia, who is the all-time leader in Ryder Cup points and a foregone conclusion to captain a future European squad, stated that the “Ryder Cup is larger than any of us.”
He was also questioned over Rory McIlroy’s remarks from this week in The Guardian, which suggested that some relationships would be irreparably broken as a result of the rift caused by LIV Golf.
“I’m not having any issues. You’re asking the incorrect person, according to Garcia. “I don’t have an issue with any of [the players who stayed on the PGA Tour],” the player said.
