Miami Open: Emma Raducanu lost to Bianca Andreescu in a matchup of past US Open champions, and she was eliminated from the Miami Open in the first round.
British player Raducanu, who won the US Open in 2021, was defeated 6-3 3-6 6-2 by Canadian winner Andreescu at Flushing Meadows. Andreescu will now move on to the second round to take on seventh seed Maria Sakkari.
“We’re both good players, and we’ve both won a [Grand Slam],” remarked Raducanu. “Although I believe there were clearly some stretches of fairly brilliant tennis, it was always going to be a challenging matchup.”
In her first competition since losing in the second round of the Australian Open in January, Raducanu defeated the world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 in Indian Wells last week.
After breaking Raducanu in the opening set’s first service game, Andreescu, whose run in Indian Wells last week was also interrupted by Swiatek, pushed the Brit to preserve break points at 1-4 and a set point at 2-5.
Andreescu went on to win the set but was broken by Raducanu in the eighth game of the second set. After a marathon 21-minute game, Raducanu’s opponent ultimately converted her seventh break point, tying the match in the following service game.
Both players held off break points early in the decider—Andreescu trailed 0-40 in the first game—but the Canadian eventually broke to lead 4-2 and then again to win in two hours and 33 minutes and improve to 2-0 versus Raducanu.
When the two previously faced off, Raducanu retired with a set and a 2-1 deficit in Rome last year.
Raducanu on wrist issues: I need to decide my course of action
The 20-year-old is scheduled to play on clay again in Stuttgart early next month, making him “unavailable” for Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup match against France in Coventry from April 14–15.
After losing, Raducanu told Andreescu that she would like to get new guidance on how to deal with her wrist issues this season.
She said, “I’ve been managing it for a while now. After this competition, I really simply need to reflect and decide what to do next. I can play now, but the long-term viability of the current solutions is questionable.
“I feel like this year has been challenging since I’ve had to manage a couple of ongoing injuries, which has been unpleasant and disappointing because I’ve been working as hard as I can.”
