ATP Tour: Top seed Carlos Alcaraz won his seventh ATP championship last month in Argentina before falling short in the Rio Open championship match on Sunday. Alcaraz competed against Cameron Norrie in both finals, although Norrie has now withdrawn from the ATP 500 tournament in Mexico.
CarlUS Open winner Carlos Alcaraz and British No. 1 Cameron Norrie have both withdrawn from this week’s ATP 500 event in Acapulco due to hamstring injuries.
Alcaraz sustained the injury while losing to Norrie in the Rio Open final on Sunday when he was supposed to play his first match on Tuesday.
Alcaraz now hopes to be fit to play at next week’s BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the first ATP Tour 1000 tournament of the year. The Spaniard was hampered by soreness with both his movement and serve throughout the defeat.
“According to the tests we took this morning, I have a grade 1 strain in my right hamstring, which will keep me out for a few days,” Alcaraz stated on Twitter.
“I’m really disappointed that I can’t participate here, but it’s time to consider resting and getting ready as quickly as possible. I’ll hopefully see everyone soon!”
Alcaraz enjoyed a successful comeback when he defeated Norrie in the final of the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires in February after missing more than three months of competition due to abdominal and hamstring ailments.
The Rio Open’s 19-year-old required medical attention for a left leg issue during his semi-final match and then had another injury during his match against Norrie in the final.
Norrie also withdrew from the tournament in Mexico, citing the need for relaxation following consecutive final appearances.
The British player, who now has 18 match victories on the ATP Tour, is expected to make a comeback at the Indian Wells hardcourt tournament starting the next week.
“Sadly, I must cancel my trip to Acapulco, Norrie stated on his Instagram story. It’s one of my favourite events, so giving up is incredibly difficult for me.”
