Boxing Live: Oleksandr Usyk, who has been unable to reach an agreement for a WBA mandatory championship defence against Daniel Dubois, maybe “interested” in facing Deontay Wilder.
The WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight champion from Ukraine hasn’t been able to agree on a match with Dubois, the WBA’s mandatory challenger.
Despite the fact that Wilder, the WBA’s top contender, is next in line to take over if Usyk vs. Dubois is cancelled, purse bids have already been placed for next Thursday.
While defending his WBA “regular” championship in December, Dubois hurt his knee after being knocked out three times in the first round and forcing Kevin Lerena to be stopped in the third.
Shelly Finkel, the manager of Wilder, said to Sky Sports: “If Deontay was offered the fight against Oleksandr Usyk, of course we would be interested.”
In a statement, the World Boxing Association (WBA) said: “The World Boxing Association (WBA) ordered the Purse bid between heavyweight super champion Oleksandr Usyk and his mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois, which will take place on May 25 in Houston, Texas.”
Despite a breakdown in negotiations, Usyk’s management is still open to discussing an undisputed world championship bout with WBC champion Tyson Fury, and promoter Alexander Krassyuk informed Sky Sports that this fight is still the top goal.
“Undisputed is the fight we would like to have this year,” declared Krassyuk.
Bakole is also scheduled to take against Usyk
Congolese contestant Martin Bakole, who resides in Scotland and is ranked No. 2, is barely behind Wilder and has shown interest in a future confrontation with Usyk.
According to his trainer Billy Nelson, “Martin Bakole would definitely accept the Usyk fight and would be very confident of winning the three titles and returning the belts to Scotland and the Congo.”
“Martin Bakole would take that fight without a doubt if anything with Daniel Dubois and Wilder falls through.”
Usyk’s camp quickly denied Bakole’s claim that he stopped him in a sparring session after the fighter claimed it to Sky Sports.
But since his brutal knockout of Ihor Shevadzutskyi in the third round last month, Bakole has improved his abilities in preparation for a title bout.
