Unified Belt: Oleksandr Usyk has declared that he will defend his unified world heavyweight championship against Daniel Dubois on August 26 in Poland.
In a social media post, the Ukrainian star disclosed details of his WBA obligatory championship defence, announcing that he will meet WBA ‘regular champion Dubois in Wroclaw at the Tarczynski Arena.
Usyk was supposed to face Tyson Fury in an undisputed fight at Wembley Stadium in April, but talks fell through.
“I am thrilled that we will be able to hold my fight in Poland, where I won my first world title seven years ago,” Usyk stated.
“I’d like to express my gratitude to the Poles who are sincerely assisting Ukraine. This lovely country has housed hundreds of thousands of my countrymen.
“As a result, I hope that my fight will provide another opportunity for Ukrainians and Poles to unite and strengthen our friendship.”
“He is a great fighter, and I respect him, but it’s my time now,” Dubois continued. “I’m going to wow the world and show everyone just how wonderful Daniel Dubois is.”
He has an unblemished 20-0 (13) record since turning professional, and back-to-back victories against Britain’s Anthony Joshua have cemented his position as the unified champion of boxing’s top division.
Meanwhile, Dubois will fight for the first time since successfully defending his WBA’regular’ championship with a third-round knockout of Kevin Lerena in December, during which he sustained a knee injury and was knocked down three times in the opening round.
After losing his debut professional fight to fellow British heavyweight contender Joe Joyce in November 2020, the 25-year-old Londoner has clawed his way back into contention with four consecutive stoppage wins and is currently 19-1 (18) in the paid ranks.
Dubois parted relations with trainer Shane McGuigan in May and is currently working with Don Charles, who formerly worked with British heavyweight Derek Chisora.
