Boxing Fight: Daniel Dubois pledged to bring the championships ‘back home’ as he squared off against Oleksandr Usyk ahead of their world heavyweight title battle on August 26.
The couple met for a press appearance in London, with the Ukrainian bursting into a weird rap after a heated fight.
Usyk will defend his unified heavyweight championships against WBA mandatory challenger Dubois, who will fight for the first time since December when he stopped Kevin Lerena in the third round after suffering a knee injury and being felled three times in the opening round.
“I’m ready 100 percent,” Dubois stated, full of certainty. “We’re ready to fight. That’s all there is to it. We’re bringing their crowns back home. They’ll accompany me. It’s my time, absolutely my time. Usyk has been a fantastic champion, and as I have stated, everything with a beginning must have an end. His ‘zero’ must go.”
“I’ve got to outmanoeuvre him in everything,” the 25-year-old British candidate said of the work ahead of him. I’m younger and stronger, and I need to let it all go. Let loose on this dude. I was made for it.”
Despite being considered the underdog by bookmakers, Dubois remained unaffected, saying, “The bookies can say whatever they want, there’s no pressure on me. I’m going to be completely prepared for him to steal those belts.”
Usyk began by delivering a poem that his publicist Alex Krassyuk said would take too long to interpret, however Krassyuk did hint the portion was “about enemies who are going to be destroyed.”
Usyk returns to the ring after a year away, defeating Anthony Joshua for the second time in Saudi Arabia to defend his unified belts.
“I have a lot of respect for my opponent; he’s a nice man, a nice guy, and a nice athlete,” Usyk added. He got to be the required challenger, thus he deserves it. All my admiration for him, his crew, and everyone around him. But let’s stop talking and watch what happens on August 26.
When asked for his farewell message to Dubois, the unbeaten winner said boldly, “I am the message.”
“I’ve seen myself in his eyes,” Usyk stated after the press briefing. “He’s tense. I’m not generally under strain; the only time I am is during training.”
