WBC Statement: Conor Benn says he is ‘pleased to clear his reputation’ after being reinstated to the WBC ranks and cleared to resume his career after a failed drugs test last year.
Benn tested positive for a banned substance the week before his scheduled fight against Chris Eubank Jr in October, which was later cancelled when the British Boxing Board of Control forbade him from fighting.
According to the WBC, Benn’s “very higher consumption of eggs” constituted a “logical explanation” for his failed drug test.
Benn stated in his Instagram story on Thursday night that he was not totally satisfied with the WBC’s reply.
“I’m relieved that the WBC has finally cleared my name, with no fine or restriction and a return to the world rankings. I can finally put this behind me and get back to work.
“Although I am pleased with the final result, I do not agree with everything mentioned in the WBC statement. That is something I am addressing with my legal team further.
“There will be more remarks later, but for now, I just want to focus on getting my career back on track after being virtually barred from fighting for many months.
“I’d want to thank my supporters for their patience and tenacity, and I’m looking forward to my triumphant homecoming.”
Benn is still under investigation by UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control, who issued their own statement, and would be unable to box in the UK while the inquiry is ongoing.
Nonetheless, he may be able to find another nation and a different jurisdiction to box in.
“Conor Benn completed his registration procedure in the WBC Clean Boxing Program in February of 2022,” according to a WBC statement. All fighters ranked in the top 15 in the WBC Ratings must enrol in the WBC CBP. As a result, he was enlisted in the WBC CBP’s out-of-competition anti-doping testing in July 2022, when the samples for which the WBC Ruling published above were collected.
