WBC’s Egg Defence: Conor Benn claims that the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) failed to show “concern for his mental state” when working to clear his name after a failed drug test. He also claims that the WBC’s egg defence did him a “disservice.”
After being sidelined after testing positive for a prohibited substance prior to his fight with Chris Eubank Jr. in October of last year, Benn made his way back into the WBC rankings last week.
The WBC came to the conclusion that Benn’s “highly-elevated egg consumption” was a “reasonable explanation” for his unfavourable test result. On his Instagram at the time, Benn expressed his happiness at being reinstated while also making it clear that he did not agree with all of the statements made by the sanctioning organisation.
Benn expressed his dissatisfaction with the WBC’s decision in a new statement issued on Tuesday, complaining that “the method in which I’ve been cleared has managed to provoke greater concerns and lend further fuel to false negative speculation.”
He said at the outset: “I’ve been cleared of drug cheating by the WBC. I appreciate the outcome very much. The only option I was willing to accept was the proper choice.”
In his defence to the WBC and in the 270-page report he gave them, Benn said, “At no point did I mention that I failed any VADA tests as a result of tainted eggs. The WBC commissioned its own experts to examine my supplements and food as part of its thorough inquiry, and they came to the conclusion that egg contamination was most likely to blame. These professionals have observed similar problems in top athletes from other sports, so I have no reason to doubt their conclusion that I am not a cheater.
“I feel like the WBC statement did a disservice to my defence, which was based on a thorough scientific review of the testing procedures, which set out a number of reasons why we believed the results were totally unreliable and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am innocent,” the defendant said.
The WBC has been contacted by Sky Sports News for comment.
Benn also expressed concerns about how the testing he underwent was conducted, stating that this was the cause of his test failures. WADA and UKAD have been approached by Sky Sports News for comment.
