UK Anti-Doping: Conor Benn has been officially charged by the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) for failing drug tests and has been temporarily barred from competing.
Before his anticipated catchweight match against Chris Eubank Jr. in October of last year, Benn, 26, tested twice positive for the female reproductive medication clomifene.
Benn, who renounced his British boxing licence after testing positive, tweeted in response to UKAD’s announcement on Thursday: “Another day, another attempt to create a headline with my name…
“I am a party to a private proceeding, and I have complied with my confidentiality duties. Nonetheless, a fresh leak and inaccurate portrayal of the situation appear every day.
“There is nothing new. The method through which an athlete must protect oneself begins when they are “charged.”
“I have not received a reprimand from anyone and am not prohibited from boxing. I’m still free to compete in matches that the BBBoC does not approve of. Even worse, I lack a BBBoC licence.”
In a statement, UKAD said: “In accordance with the UK Anti-Doping Regulations, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) confirms that Mr. Benn was informed of and provisionally suspended by UKAD on March 15, 2023.
“Mr Benn is not permitted to participate in (or help another athlete participate in) any capacity in any competition, event, or activity that is organised, convened, approved, or recognised by the British Boxing Board of Control or any other World Anti-Doping Code-compliant sport while he is on a provisional suspension.
“Furthermore, UKAD can attest that on April 3, 2023, it accused Mr. Benn of violating Article 2.2 due to the alleged usage of an illegal substance (clomifene). According to UK Anti-Doping Guidelines, the charge against Mr. Benn is still pending and will now proceed through the results management process.”
Although UKAD typically does not make suspensions or charges public until after a case has been completed, Benn’s position was found to present “extraordinary circumstances.”
The BBBofC has the authority to ask other regulatory authorities to forbid the unbeaten Londoner from competing abroad.
The BBBofC said in a statement that it relied on UKAD to make sure that professional boxers complied with the UKAD Rules (as they were incorporated into the BBBoC’s Rules and Regulations) and that it was waiting for the results of the UKAD process.
Both UKAD and the BBBofC state that they will not add any more commentary at this time.
