World Championship: Tom Aspinall, a heavyweight champion in the UFC, believes Tommy Fury can do the same.
Aspinall is familiar with Fury because they have previously trained together. He thinks Fury has the potential to become a world-class boxer.
“I believe Tommy was between the ages of 16 and 17 when I first started sparring with him at the gym where he trained. I’ve therefore known Tommy for a very long period,” Aspinall told Sky Sports News.
“Do I believe he will go on to win the global championship? Yeah. He’s only 23 years old, therefore he’s young. With another five or six years of training, I’m confident he could continue and accomplish that sort of thing.”
Yet, Fury may still compete against well-known influencers from YouTube and social media.
“The decision is kind of in his hands right now,” Aspinall added, so it depends on what he wants to do.
“Yet kudos to him for succeeding financially. If you can, go make some money. I wouldn’t refuse that payment. Fair play to him because I would be carrying out exactly what he is.”
Aspinall believes Fury did well in that setting despite the criticism both he and Jake Paul have received for their pay-per-view spectacle from last weekend.
“I liked watching his fight,” Aspinall stated. “These are not amateurs. Those are, like, intermediate, I suppose.
“I think that maybe damaged them a little bit, fighting with that skill level in such a high-pressure circumstance. They certainly possess the ability to defeat one another in a variety of situations. They would have known about the stoppage if it had been on a local show or anything like that.
“They likely overreacted when they shouldn’t have overreacted, or they may have done the opposite and frozen up when the finish was within reach. Given how many conflicts they’ve both had, the situation is quite stressful. Congrats to them.”
