LIV Golf: After losing his position as Ryder Cup captain, Henrik Stenson responded in Bedminster by winning his first LIV Golf Invitational Series event and collecting a hefty paycheck.
After deciding to join the Greg Norman-led breakaway circuit, Stenson lost his position as Europe’s next Ryder Cup captain. He shot a two-under 69 at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster to finish at 11 under par and take home the $4 million (£3.28 million) individual first prize.
The 54-hole tournament’s final round saw the Swede hold a five-stroke lead at one point, but he ultimately settled for a two-stroke triumph over Dustin Johnson and Matthew Wolff, with Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz finishing fourth a further shot back.
“I guess we can agree I played like a captain,” Stenson joked in a post-round interview. “It’s been a good first week obviously. Nice to be here with the guys getting a feel for it. It’s been a busy 10 days and I’m extremely proud I managed to finish as well as I did.”
Stenson, who started the day three shots ahead of Johnson, made birdies at holes one and five to get to the turn in 33 and added another at hole fourteen, a par three, to appear to be in complete control of the competition. The lead was narrowed with a bogey at the par-five 15th before Stenson closed out the victory with three consecutive pars.
Along with Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Sam Horsfield, the 46-year-old received an additional $375,000 (£308,000) as a member of the Majestic squad, which placed second in the team competition.
With a 25 under the total, Johnson’s 4 Aces team of Patrick Reed, Pat Perez, and Talor Gooch took first place in the team tournament for the second time in a row. The Sergio Garcia-captained Fireballs GC placed third.
What will the LIV Golf Invitational Series do after that?
The third tournament in the LIV Golf Invitational Series’ inaugural season was held this past week. The next tournament will be held in Boston from September 2-4, the week following the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship.
The fifth tournament will take place at Rich Harvest Farms in Chicago from September 16–18. Stonehill Golf Club in Bangkok will host the event from October 7-9, while the Saudi International has just been hosted at Royal Greens Golf Club.
From October 27 to 30, the season-ending Team Championship will take place at Trump National Doral Miami. In 2023, LIV Golf intends to offer a more extensive schedule.
