The Masters: Tom Hoge won by a single stroke in the yearly pre-tournament Par 3 competition at The Masters, while Seamus Power had a remarkable round at Augusta National.
The 33-year-old shot a six-under 21 to take the lead over fellow countrymen Kurt Kitayama and Bubba Watson. He combined four birdies with a spectacular hole-in-one at the par-three eighth.
Five holes-in-one were recorded during the competition, which is the third-highest total in the tournament’s history. Hoge, an American, is now attempting to become the first person to win both The Masters and a par-three competition in the same week.
Hoge stated, “I made a few birdies early and then it was cool to watch the hole-in-one go in on eight. Just a nice afternoon spent here with my wife serving as my caddy. Today was a good start to the week, so try to keep it up.”
Scottie Scheffler, the current Masters champion, and world No. 1 Scottie Watson both recorded hole-in-ones on their last holes to tie for the lead at five under.
With 1992 Masters champion Fred Couples shooting a three-under 24 and Abraham Ancer coming within inches of an ace at the first on his route to a two-under 25, Si Woo Kim shared fourth place with Taylor Moore and Ryan Fox, who was making his Masters debut.
As Power became only the third player in tournament history to make back-to-back holes-in-one late in his round, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm were also in the field as they attempted to complete the career Grand Slam.
Power’s tee shot on the eighth hole made a remarkable spin back into the cup for an ace, and he duplicated the feat on the 135-yard ninth hole to elicit raucous cheers from the spectators at the newly refurbished Par-3 course.
Power remarked, “It’s a dream come true. Naturally, receiving one was great, but receiving a second seemed rather weird. Outside, it was an absolute blast. Undoubtedly a first, that!”
