United Cup: Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the United Cup a day before he was set to play his opening match, citing a recent injury experienced in Dubai.
The mixed-team competition, which will take the place of the ATP Cup, will debut between December 29 and January 8 in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, all in Australia. Six groupings comprise teams from 18 different nations.
Alex de Minaur, Jason Kubler, Sam Stosur, Ajla Tomljanovic, John Peers, Zoe Hives, and Maddison Inglis are among the Australian team’s players. Lleyton Hewitt, a former world number one, and Stosur serve as the hosts’ co-captains. In a pre-tournament press conference that the entire squad attended earlier on Wednesday, Stosur disclosed that the group learned of Kyrgios’ choice just minutes before the match began.
Stosur stated, “We literally just learned 10 minutes ago.”
The 2022 Wimbledon champion decided to shift de Minaur and Kubler to the No. 1 and No. 2 men’s spots, respectively, in the Australian team, as announced on the tournament’s official Twitter account.
“Due to an injury, Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the United Cup. Team Australia’s No. 1 men’s position will be taken by Alex de Minaur, who will be followed by Jason Kubler in the No. 2 position,” read the tweet.
Group D was assigned to Australia, Great Britain, and Spain. On Thursday in Sydney, world No. 22 Kyrgios was slated to play Cameron Norrie of Great Britain. He will be replaced for the fixture by de Minaur. On January 2, Kyrgios was also scheduled to compete against Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion. De Minaur, who is rated 24th, will take his place once more.
If Kyrgios is able to recover from his injuries, the Australian Open in 2023 will be his next tournament.
