Western & Southern Open: Cameron Norrie, the No. 1 seed from Great Britain, defeated Carlos Alcaraz, the third seed, to advance to the Western & Southern Open semifinals in Cincinnati, where he will play Borna Coric, who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 6-4.
The 19-year-old Spaniard was defeated by Norrie in just over three hours after he blew a 4-1 lead in the second set and then came back from 1-3 down in the deciding.
“I just wanted to hang tough with him. I thought I had the advantage in physicality and the legs and I was just trying to make every rally as physical as I could,” said Norrie.
As Norrie outperformed his opponent’s service at 4-4 in the third set to secure the victory, Alcaraz, who was vying for his third ATP Masters 1000 title this season, was left to regret a series of break-point opportunities. He converted just two of 13 of them.
“It was a really good battle and just what I needed ahead of the US Open,” added Norrie.
