United Cup: Jason Kubler, a tennis player from Australia, commended Nick Kyrgios for withdrawing from the United Cup’s inaugural tournament and allowing him to represent Team Australia.
A day before Team Australia’s opening match against Team Great Britain, Kyrgios withdrew from the competition due to injury concerns. Due to the 27-year-unavailability, old’s Kubler was given the opportunity to fill his position, which he seized with both hands.
Daniel Evans was defeated 6-3, 7-6(3) by 29-year-old Kubler, giving his team a crucial point. In his second round at the competition, the World No. 107 extended his good start to the year by defeating Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Kubler expressed his gratitude to Nick Kyrgios for giving him the opportunity to compete at the event in his post-match news conference. He stated:
“In fact, I texted him following my victory over Evo. I wrote him a message saying, “Thank you so much for the chance. Basically, I’m hoping that your health improves so that we can meet up before the Australian Open.”
Kubler stated that he believes Kyrgios would have excelled if he had participated in the competition. He stated:
“This is how I see things. He could have participated and performed amazingly well, as I’m sure we all believe he is capable of. He, fortunately, offered me the chance to play, and I’ve kind of grabbed it by the horns and run with it.”
He also acknowledged that, had Kyrgios not pulled out of the competition, he would have enjoyed to watch him play against Norrie and Nadal.
As much as I personally would have liked to watch the match between Kyrgios and Norrie or Rafa, he continued, “But yeah, just one of those things where, yeah, luckily he offered me the opportunity and I’m just going for it.”
