Rio Open: In the Rio Open final on Sunday, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz was defeated by Britain’s Cameron Norrie, who rallied from a set down to defeat the 19-year-old Spaniard. Norrie had previously lost to Alcaraz in the Buenos Aires final.
Norrie, who won his fifth career ATP championship and first in 2023, appeared to be on the verge of falling to the defending winner of the clay court competition for the second time in a row when he was broken in the second set.
But, Norrie took the initiative and won four straight games to tie the match after US Open winner Alcaraz required assistance wrapping his right leg halfway through the set.
Following the third set saw two breaks that were exchanged, Alcaraz saved two break points in a thrilling ninth game, but Norrie successfully converted a break point opportunity on his fourth attempt in the penultimate game to win the ATP 500 match.

It was a terrific day because, as Norrie noted, “I was looking done there and I managed to flick a switch and turn it around.”
“The last few weeks have been difficult for me, but I’ve managed to play well in crunch time, and that’s what it required tonight.”
Alcaraz, who missed more than three months of competition due to hamstring and abdominal ailments, also required care on Saturday after defeating qualifier Nicolas Jarry in the semifinals.
It had been a difficult two weeks of tennis, so naturally, your physical condition wasn’t at its best,” according to Alcaraz.
“Even though I sensed something in my leg, it didn’t help. It’s time to rest up now.”
Alcaraz stated that the injury would need to be evaluated but left open the possibility of competing in Mexico the following week.
“I enjoy Acapulco a lot. I want to travel there and perform for the Mexican audience,” he said.
