Los Cabos Open: World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev defeated Cameron Norrie of Britain 7-5, 6-0 on Saturday to win the title in Los Cabos, Mexico, and start getting ready to defend his US Open crown. This victory put an end to Medvedev’s losing streak in the finals.
Due to a Wimbledon ban on Russian players as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Medvedev was forced to skip the grasscourt championship and made his return to competition at the ATP 250 event in Mexico.
Medvedev has had the majority of his success on hardcourts throughout the years, and this week, en way to his first championship of the year, he didn’t drop a set.
“Every match was very good, but the final is always special,” Medvedev said. “In the final, you play the best player of this week, so it’s always a high-level match and I’m really happy that I managed to show some good level, some good shots in such an important match.”
The Russian entered the match against Norrie, the champion from the previous year and the 12th-ranked player in the world, having lost five consecutive finals dating back to the November Paris Masters of the previous year. The 26-year-old was then defeated in the ATP Finals title match the previous year.
Before losing championship matches on grass in the Netherlands and Germany, he lost the Australian Open final at the start of 2022.
Norrie, meanwhile, aimed to win his third ATP championship of the year and defend the crown he won the previous season.
On Saturday, Daniil Medvedev required medical attention in the 11th game after scraping his hand on the court and drawing blood while attempting to hit a ball, just moments after left-handed Norrie had fended off two set points to tie the match at 5-5 in the first set.
The Russian, who last year at Flushing Meadows won his first Grand Slam title, picked up the pace after that and won the next eight games to win the match.
“It was not easy. Cam is an amazing player, so it was really intense,” Medvedev said. “When you play against Cam, you know that you have to fight for every point.
“Actually bleeding helped me I think a little bit so I could hold my nerve a little bit more. Since then I just managed to play good and it was enough today.”
Norrie said: “I fought as hard as I could do, but Daniil was too good. Well done to you and your team. You definitely deserve it this week.
“I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for supporting me. I love playing in Mexico and that is the reason why I come back. I really feel good here.”
