In the Argentina Open final, top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie in straight sets.
At the Buenos Aires clay court tournament, second seed Norrie, who made it to the Wimbledon semifinals last year, was going for his fifth ATP Tour singles championship.
Alcaraz, a 19-year-old US Open winner who had been sidelined since November due to abdominal and leg ailments, prevailed 6-3 7-5 in just over 90 minutes to become the youngest Argentina Open champion.
The world no. 2 took the serve at 3-3 in the contest. Alcaraz won the opening set by breaking Norrie twice in a row.
Although Norrie, 27, broke back at 5-3 to tie the score, Alcaraz persevered and eventually broke again to secure the victory. Norrie, 27, was broken in his opening service game of the second set, falling behind 3-0.
Alcaraz, who closed the gap between himself and Novak Djokovic in the rankings by 590 points, remarked, “I felt quite comfortable playing the final.”
“I anticipated it would be really challenging. I began to pay close attention to what I needed to do first, my game, and my level.
“I have to play this level in the championship. Despite my struggles over the past four months, it is truly wonderful.”
Alcaraz lost just one set in his opening match of the year versus Serbia’s Laslo Djere.
With the Rotterdam win, Medvedev climbs back into the top 10.
After a dismal showing at the Australian Open last month, Daniil Medvedev thinks his run to the title in Rotterdam and a return to the top 10 in the world rankings will serve as the ideal springboard for the remainder of the season.
Following his third-round loss to Sebastian Korda at Melbourne Park, Medvedev dropped to No. 12, but the 27-year-old Russian found his groove again in Rotterdam last week, defeating Jannik Sinner 5-7 6-2 6-2 to win his maiden championship of 2023.
The eighth-ranked player in the world, Dmitry Medvedev, remarked, “It’s amazing since it’s only the beginning of the year. “My third tournament of the year has already resulted in a victory. I probably required 12 tournaments or something similar the previous year. doing well here and defeating top competitors.
“Despite playing well in Adelaide, Novak Djokovic defeated me. It’s difficult to bounce back after dropping out of the top 10 and losing in the third round of a Grand Slam you were hoping to win, which is why the Australian Open was so mentally discouraging.
“I’m glad to be back in form. I’m eagerly anticipating the next competition and I hope I can keep going this way.”
